The Brazilian state owned company Petrobras made a colossal oil discovery of 5 to 8 billion barrels of light oil and gas and a field called Tupi in southern Brazil area. This is the world’s biggest oil find after the 12 billion barrel field discovered in 2000. This field will be able to produce about 100, 000 barrels a day, but this number can reach 1 million before 2020 which is more than the biggest US oil field in Alaska. The major challenge for the Petrobras company is to glimpse beneath the 7000 feet of water, then 17000 feet of sand, rock and finally a massive salt layer. Today, there are tools in order to do it but even though they are an experienced company in deepwater drilling, they never had a field coming from below the salt canopy.
I think this discovery is going to be a great asset to the country’s growth because the oil they have been producing until now was only for self sufficient purpose. Specially now that the world is worrying about the lack of usable oil, and the price of oil is continually increasing. Now, with this humongous amount of oil, they will be able to produce oil and export them throughout the globe. If the current technology would be able to explore this field, so it gives us hope to discover more oil fields throughout the globe and make use of them.
