Daddy diaper bags, barking robots fill ’08 niche

Rucksack-like diaper bags that dads can carry without embarrassment, tourist packages for senior citizens and mobile phones with tracking chips for children are among the year’s most promising products, according to the National Statistical Office’s analysis of “BlueSumers.”
BlueSumer, a word created by the statistics agency, means consumers drawn to “blue oceans,” a phrase that describes new, uncontested markets. The agency designated seven BlueSumer categories for 2008 yesterday. They include parents of only children; young consumers seeking high-end goods and services; middle-aged and older consumers actively seeking travel and cultural services; childless couples and couples whose children have grown who have time for romance; stay-at-home dads and house husbands; people who live alone and children and parents concerned about the increasing crimes against children.
“We interpreted changes in social trends and consumer sensitivity based on national data,” the statistics agency said in a statement. “After analyzing the population, consumption and other statistics, we have designated the BlueSumers.”
For example, the agency pointed out that people in their 50s accounted for 17.5 percent of overseas tourists last year, higher than any other age group. In addition, spending on culture and entertainment by people in their 50s or older is increasing. Accordingly, the agency said travel and leisure packages for older people and cosmetic surgery that hides aging are promising products.
Also, with the number of sexual crimes against children under 13 rising to 1,081 in 2007 from 642 in 2003, worried parents will purchase mobile phones for their children with tracking chips and security services that guard children’s safety, the agency said.
